There’s a SOT-23 device under the tab, but I can’t identify it. I’m guessing to monitor drive heat, or possibly confirm that a drive is inserted. This is obviously some kind of sensor but I’m not sure what it’s for. I put some electrical tape on those tabs to hold them down and voila, the new drives were available in the old 10.9 with USB devices attached. These tabs are depressed when a regular 3.5” drive is installed, but not with a 2.5” drive which is substantially thinner. Then I noticed that there are metal tabs on the motherboard next to each of the SATA ports. I tried several different combinations of USB devices and it didn’t seem to be any one in particular causing the problem. After some troubleshooting I discovered that if I unplugged all extra USB devices then the SSDs would show up again in the old 10.9, but I still couldn’t boot from the new 10.9. This wasn’t an issue in either 10.12 partition. Also, when I booted into the old 10.9 neither of the new SSDs showed up anywhere, as if they weren’t even installed (they were available in boot select). I was able to boot in safe mode but otherwise couldn’t get it to load normally. However the new SSD 10.9 just gave me the “universal no access symbol” after loading for a while on the apple screen. I used Carbon Copy Cloner to copy both original system drives over to the new SSD and tried to boot into them.įirst off, I was able to boot into both of the old drives and the new 10.12 partition just fine.

I'm trying to find out if it's an OWC issue, or Apple. I called OWC as well and they are not aware of any issues yet but the Mac Pro just started arriving yesterday so it's still new territory. The "senior advisor" was not even aware there was a new 2023 Mac Pro (LOL) and hadn't watched the WWDC yet. I chatted with Apple Support today and they are looking into it, but I don't feel too confident about it. Additional PCIe storage is essential in a pro studio. I was so excited to get to work but I can't use this machine and get by on just the internal storage. I am using the internal Mac SSD to boot from as you normally would and without the PCIe SSDs, the computer seems to run just fine. These are just storage for my actual audio projects, which is common in audio studios to have a dedicated drive for all the audio work. I am not using these drives to boot the MacOS from. I've been using them over 20 years now without issue. OWC is a VERY reliable brand and widely used in the pro audio and video community. I had also purchased a new OWC Accelsior 8M2 and planned for it to be my main working audio drive but the issue also happens with that SSD, so it's safe to say it's not a faulty SSD. If I connect the chassis when the Mac is booted, it freezes. Even if I put the OWC SSD in a Sonnet PCIe to Thunderbolt chassis, the same thing happens. This drive works and I put it back in my 2019 Mac Pro and there are no issues. Something I've been doing for over two decades now and didn't expect that to be a showstopper.Īs soon as I installed my previously working OWC SSD OWC Accelsior 4M2 the Mac Pro would NOT boot. The final steps included adding some additional storage for my audio projects. This morning I was ready to do the final steps and get back to work. I just spent all night setting my new M2 Mac Pro.
